William Thomas James N. Carpenter was born in 1913 [Mildenhall Q1-1913 4A:1823], the son of William and Alice CARPENTER (née NICHOLAS),

In the 1939 register his parents were at The Orchard, The Green, West Row. William J [19-12-1886] a farm labourer, Alice [1-11-1884]. The are two closed records.

He married Ada Violet TURNER in 1940 (Norwich Q4-1940 4B:637), later of Bury St Edmunds.


The 2nd Norfolks were at the time pursuing the Japanese as they retreated. The Battle for Kohima had just succeeded in first holding then opening up the road to Imphal, forcing the Japanese to withdraw.

According to CWGC the 2nd Norfolks lost 14 men that day, all bar one buried in Kohima.

Initially buried at Viswema Spur, identified by his disc and a cross on the grave, he was re-interred in Kohima War Cemetery on 10th October 1944.

In the Kohima Cemetery is the monument on which are inscribed the words of the Kohima Epitaph:

When you go home, tell them of us and say
For your tomorrow, we gave our today
